SUNDAY MASS

The celebration of the Sunday Mass is at the heart of our Parish life. We seek to draw together our church members and our many visitors from all over the world in a worthy offering of prayer and praise.

Worship at St Francis, Gladstone Park, ceased after Christmas 2005. This is because we need time to decide whether we can run two congregations (and two sets of buildings) in our parish. The 9.30 am Mass has moved to St Andrew's - and Sunday worship is as below.

9.30 am Mass
The 9.30 Mass has a congregation of about 20 - 30, There is an activity area for children, and coffee is served after Mass.
11 am    Sung Mass

The 11 am Mass draws a larger and varied congregation. We make much of the music and sing everything from plainchant to Graham Kendrick via Moody and Sankey. We have a team of servers - and an Ricard Rorirosa is our accompanist. We have had several attempts at forming a choir, but without success.  We are looking for a cantor - male or female - who can read music and has the confidence to lead the responsorial psalm and mass setting.

At all our Masses we place emphasis on the breaking of the word as well as the breaking of bread: preaching is an important ministry among us. At the end of this Mass there is often an opportunity to celebrate special occasions with thanksgiving and prayer. There is a Young Church for children which now happens in our new Parish Centre opened at the end of 2006 together with an activity area for toddlers.

During 2006 there were numerous thefts from St Andrew's, and much pointless damage, including the breaking of a processional cross and cutting out of sections of wiring. Faced with such relentless destruction the Church Council took the heart-breaking decision to close St Andrew's outside the times of worship. We have not done this easily and it brings to an end a tradition of the open church which goes back to 1887.
